Army chief
General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani had introduced major reforms in the Pakistan Army
and started decreasing the number of Punjabi and Pashtun in fresh recruitments
and adopted the policy of encouraging Sindhi, Baloch and religious minorities
for making an ethnic balance.
The GHQ had
set a target of decreasing the number of Punjabi from 55.82% to 54.50% and
number of Pashtun from 15.42% to 14.50%.
Number of
Sindhi increased from 15.09% to 17%, Baloch increased from 2.34% to 4%, and
recruits from Azad Kashmir/Gilgit-Baltistan increased from 8.48% to 9% by the
year 2011. The number of non-Muslims also increased from 0.43% to 1% by the
year 2012.
In year
2011, 3,350 Baloch gotten commission in the Army, and 5,000 more Baloch had
gotten fresh commissions in 2012. The GHQ had especially relaxed many terms and
conditions only for Baloch so that they may easily join the Army.
First time
in the history of Pakistan 3, Sindhi Major Generals are serving in Pakistan
Army. Brigadier Shabir Narejo and Brigadier Javed Dost Chandio were promoted as
Major General in 2020. Major General Sarfraz Soomro was the first Sindhi Major
General. He was promoted in 2018 and he served as DG Military Intelligence
(MI).
Currently,
more than 147,000 troops are deployed on western borders, including tribal
areas, 100,000 troops are guarding areas bordering India, 10,000 troops are
busy in the UN duties outside Pakistan, and 16,000 troops are busy in training
while only 62,600 troops are enjoying rest in cantonments.
According
to some observers, Pak Army is already overstretched and it needs some
expansion but defense sources claimed that the overall size of the Army would
not be increased.
